Trajectories of transition to work life of students from liberal art and professional programmes

The aim of this article is to indicate some characteristic aspects of transition from studies to work life and the professional identity formation of the senior students and novice workers within psychology and political sciences disciplines. Described research is a part of a comparative project Students as Journeymen between Communities of Higher Education and Work (The 5th Framework Programme, HPSE CT-2001-00068) which was realized by international team involving researchers from the Department of Behavioural Science at Linkoping University in Sweden, the Institute for Educational Research at the University of Oslo in Norway, the Institute of Education at the University of Gdansk in Poland and the Field of Research for Intercultural Education at the Gerard-Merkator University, Duisburg-Essen in Germany. This paper presents Polish sample analysis of background of the groups from other countries participating in the project. Our findings are based on in-depth interviews with a sample of senior students in two educational programmes (10 psychology students and 10 students of political science) of the University of Gdansk in Poland. They were randomly selected among undergraduates in their last year of studies, constituting a representative proportion of gender according to the population in each programme at that level. For the first time they were interviewed during their second semester of their fifth year of studies (in 2002) and the second time one and the half year later when they were expected to be employed.

The methodological approach is inspired by the methods of phenomenography (Marton 1981, 1994) and discourse analysis (Talja 1999; Gee 2000).
