Experimenting with the self: a risky opportunity

Lucyna Kirwil , Yiannis Laouris

This chapter explores how the motivation of young people for online experimentation with their self and their motivation to take online risks might be related to age, gender and notions such as self-efficacy, as well as whether the two types of motivation are related to each other. The chapter also discusses the developmental trends of these types of motivation. It concludes with the thesis that motivation arising from developmental needs for construction of their self-concept, i.e. the motivation for experimenting with their self, the individual’s risk seeking attitude (based on one’s specific personality features) and child's age could be modeled as the three main predictors for neglecting safety rules and undertaking risky activities on the Internet.
