AbstractThe aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that basic hope and self> >esteem influence reactions to harm from others. The participants ( N = 86) were asked to imagine specified situations of wrongdoing and d escribe their possible reactions to them. They filled in BHI>12, measuring the presumpt ions on the orderliness and positivity of the world, and Rosenberg’s SES. The re sults indicate that basic hope is negatively related to the belief that the social wo rld is harmful and self>esteem is negatively related to the perceived harmfulness of the imagined situations. Both basic hope and self>esteem are negatively related to tend ency for revenge and positively related to reconciliation with the wrongdoer. The re sults of a former study on memory and recollections and those of the present research indicate that basic hope and self> esteem play important roles in the understanding of and reactions to interpersonal harm, although their roles differ in some respects
